Artist Statement

I have been impacted so undeniably by tragedy and great fortune that I began curiously studying the processes of life and how things happen. Following the evidence that certain actions produce beauty, I developed my own method of action painting using water as a medium, pouring solutions of mica flakes over black landscapes using a variety of techniques and constructions. My primary goal is to use what I am given on the canvas, to meet with nature and play, allowing for the unexpected products of collisions between life's cadences and my own. Curiously, what develops are the forms of life; animals, plants, cells, continents and celestial bodies.

A disability necessitates mechanical adaptations, amplifying my natural desire to engineer. For each painting I build a specific jig to deform the horizontal canvas, weighting certain areas to create heavy points of gravity, conducting the flows of particles across the surface. My need for assistance on larger paintings has led me to pouring paintings with groups of people. The collaborative efforts take me further into conceptual art as the combinations of elements within a performance coalesce to create systems akin to cosmic, weather, or eco-systems. The resulting paintings I present are documents, my pictures of the living thing.
